English Beer
Beer has been brewed in England is thought to date back to Britain’s Celtic ancestors. Hops were introduced to the UK in the 16th Century by Flemish immigrants, although hops had been used in brewing since at least the 9th Century and prior to this herbs were used to balance the sweetness of the malt. During the 18th and 19th centuries brewing boomed, with styles such as porter, IPA and pale ales being developed. Although the mid twentieth century saw a fall in the popularity of British ales, the 21st century has heralded a renaissance in beer production.
